The Willingness To Change

By Tony Fahkry | Submitted On April 25, 2015

Change is difficult. If you hope to change a personal behaviour, save money or otherwise, the Gods of change are reluctant to smile upon you in those early stages. Yet within our willingness to change lies the yearning for something more. Change heralds letting go of the tired, old and outdated to usher in the new. It shows we have gone so far with an endeavour and must allow something new to fill its place. Change is the process of life, despite the unknown path ahead. The willingness to change is crucial in any transformation since it sets into motion what will soon become. Your willingness to change is a desire to embrace a new way of life. We must be prepared to commit to new actions and confront our fears if we wish to embody the changes at a deeper level. We must venture beyond the known, beyond our comfort zone if we seek to attain inner growth. The growth I am referring to is realised when we rouse our potential, our genius, gifts and talents. Thus your willingness to change is measured by your ability to adapt to change. If we are discontent with life and seek more honest experiences, we must embrace change on all levels.

Albert Einstein said: "We cannot solve our problems with the same level of thinking that created them." Thus a new mental landscape must be formed if you wish to perceive your circumstances in a new light. The commitment to change is an obligation to your personal growth and a promising future. Change is the fabric of life - the seasons, the days, the landscape changes, yet we fear change. Thus we must abide by the cycles of life if we seek to reshape our circumstances. Fear of change is a natural response. You need not abolish your fears, 5/31/2021 The Willingness To Change https://ezinearticles.com/?The-Willingness-To-Change&id=9009854 2/2 yet integrate them into your experience. It was Susan Jeffers' acclaimed book Feel The Fear and Do It Anyway which reminds us of our commitment to embrace fear as we undergo change. Change is not indicative of losing control as many believe since we have limited control anyway. It implies surrender and detachment for the ultimate good of our personal evolution. An adjustment period is foundational to moments of growth and transformation. Allow time to acclimatise to these changes then allow it to sweep through. Life is not bound by our inner clock, so we must yield to what transpires with openness and receptivity. A change in circumstances disrupts the brain's thought process given its habituation to pattern recognition. Your mind considers historical evidence as memories to form assumptions about the future. Its habitual tendency is inclined towards established patterns. In his book The Click Moment, author Frans Johansson states,"Our brains have been designed to perceive order instead of randomness." We must acquaint ourselves with the change cycle if we wish to master change at any level. Justifiably we will slip up along the way as we integrate our new experiences into our life. This should not dissuade you from persisting, yet appreciate that the cycle of change diminishes suffering feelings of guilt along the way. I encourage you to embrace change by being open and receptive to it. Unite with your heart and mind to navigate through it. Reason and logic alone are insufficient measures to realise change since they obscure the voice of wisdom. Evidently, fear arises with any change due to uncertainty. Recall earlier that the mind is resistant to change. For that reason we must integrate new experiences into our life gradually so as not to disrupt the brain's homeostasis. Our response to this perceived fear may be expressed via the following question: "Am I responding to the fear itself or the fear of not being in control?" Our aim then is to delineate between a perceived threat to our wellbeing or an irrational fear. Fear is a facade orchestrated by the mind to protect you. Whilst it should not be construed as deleterious, your mind protects you from imminent danger by arousing suspicion when change is imminent. Fear is considered a threat to your survival when you become consumed by it since it dominates your mental landscape.

Resistance to change invites suffering by opposing what is. To avoid this, let go of your struggles and go along with the change ushered in - think unlimited opportunities. Recognise that change does not mean recoiling in hesitation, yet signifies an opportunity to move ahead into exciting times. Many people are dissatisfied with their circumstances nowadays owing to many reasons. There are two states we can learn from if we wish to master life. A Parked state denotes being stuck and stagnant. If we wish to change, we must adopt a Navigate mindset i.e. expansive, movement of energy, freedom, untethered and liberating. Those who Navigate life use these qualities to create fundamental change whilst adjusting their course along the way. Professor of Psychology at Stanford University Carol Dweck labels these types of people as having a growth mindset as opposed to a fixed mindset. Knowing change is difficult we must stay grounded and attentive if we wish to amend our circumstances.

Do not wallow in the past nor expect a future to arrive as planned, given its impact to arouse fear. Trust that your willingness to change is enough to set into motion the power to transform oneself. It is this willingness which sets alight the flame to compel sweeping changes that linger well into the future. Books On Being Successful

By Grant Sudduth | Submitted On August 13, 2016

Everyone wants to be successful. In some way, form or fashion there's a need to succeed. There are scores of books on being successful that's been printed over the years. I'd like to point you to some of my favorites. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People As an acquaintance of mine pointed out, everyone's idea of success is different and on different levels. There is monetary success, making millions of dollars, which seems to be the focus in today's world. There is career success as in getting a higher position, life success like getting married and having children and self success as in being at peace with yourself. All of these are a level of success. All of these take a certain amount of personal change. That's where my first book recommendation steps in.

Steven R. Covey's book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is also known as powerful lessons in personal change. The 7 Habits Covey gives us a step by step pathway of living with fairness, integrity and dignity. The 7 habits are as follows: Be proactive Begin with the end in mind Put first things first Think win-win Seek first to understand, then to be understood Synergize Sharpen the saw This is just a short overview. The complete book will keep you turning pages and is very comprehensive. This book is a great book to start with if you're looking for success on any level. "I am reading it with profit... it is most thoughtful and enlightening." Norman Vincent Peale 5/3/2021 Books On Being Successful https://ezinearticles.com/?Books-On-Being-Successful&id=9497224 2/2

Springboard C. Richard Shell's Springboard is the second book I'm sharing with you. In this book he guides you in your personal search for success. He answers the two questions, "What for me, is success?" and "How will I achieve it?" The book is divided into two parts, each answering each question. Shell offers various exercises throughout the book which would be of great benefit if sincerely worked on, namely the "Six Lives Exercise". This exercise helps the readers to assess their own view of success. The book focuses on the main element of your success; you. Rather than following your passion or following the money, he has you search for your own unique combination of skills and passions along with other career opportunities. Melding this all together, Shell calls it the "sweet spot". Taking time to assess what success is to you is critical to you having a happy and meaningful life.

Springboard will help you find this. "Regardless of whether you are just about to finish college or at the threshold of considering a career change, Springboard is written to help you discover what gives your life the greatest meaning---so you can set your own path and define success on your own terms." Fast Company

The Success Principles Aw, Jack Canfield. Well known for his Chicken Soup for the Soul series (which is also a great read for the success minded individual), he gives us another winner with The Success Principles. One of my favorite books, he touts this one as how to get from where you are to where you want to be. Prepare to transform yourself for success. Canfield takes you all the way from the beginning by teaching you to build confidence and to live with passion. Once you accomplish the basics, he takes you through the inner work needed to transform yourself. Then comes the success team you build to catapult your success. And of course, with success, you'll need financial awareness along with the principles to help maximize your gains. My favorite part of this book is where Canfield spells out the 64 principles used by successful men and women throughout history. This book will truly show you how to start living the principles of success today. "Canfield's principles are simple, but the results you will achieve will be extraordinary."

Anthony Robbins Wrap Up There are no guarantees for success in the monetary sense, but, it IS achievable if you keep your eye on the prize and dedicated hard work. As one of the 7 habits says, Begin with the end in mind. And of course, no one can guarantee you'll move closer to success by reading these books or listening to the audio. But, one thing for sure, it won't hurt. Do what you have to do to read these books. You'll be amazed at what they can do for you. The Ingredients of Staying Motivated

By Richard W Brennan | Submitted On July 01, 2012

The large majority of us quit at nearly every attempt we make towards nearly every goal we set. More than 95% of people, who set to achieve a goal, end up quitting far before the finish line. Many programs layout very specific plans for weight loss, financial gain, increased sales, or better savings, to name a few. However, only a very small percentage of the populations that buy in to these programs succeed. For the most part, these programs teach valid principles that would lead to success if maintained. However, all that we've proven over the last 50 years is even when we're handed the perfect solution for success, we are still highly likely to stop pursuing the goal and revert back to our familiar way of living. Well, what do those people, who succeed, have that we don't? How are they able to keep their focus and prevent barriers on the journey to success from stopping them?

What is preventing us from success that others can move past? Over the next series of articles, we're going to investigate from where our motivation originates and what is needed to move past the barriers that get in the way of success. Extrinsic Motivation Defined: Extrinsic motivation drives individuals to do things for tangible rewards or pressures, rather than for the fun of it (Petri, 1995). For most of us, when we establish a vision or goal it starts with extrinsic motivation. At times, extrinsic motivation can be very powerful and move us past obstacles that seem insurmountable. For instance, the famous story of Aron Ralston, whose cut off his arm with a dull pocket knife after getting trapped under a boulder, is an amazing story of the power of extrinsic motivation. Aron had envisioned a son he never had the very last night he was trapped. It was the powerful image of his future son that gave him the strength to painstakingly cut through bone, tendon, and nerve to free himself from the rock. In this case external motivation fueled him past major barriers. Longevity is another example of an extrinsic reward. Personally, the thought of living a fulfilling and long life where I'm active with a purpose gives me motivation to make the best decisions I can make today, such as drinking tea, exercising, deep breathing, being in nature, and strong ties with my community.

Having an extrinsic motivation does not mean that you won't enjoy the activity. In fact, if you're lucky, you'll find both an intrinsic and extrinsic motivation for pursuing a vision. But more often than not, a goal will begin with an extrinsic motivator and it's important to understand that this motivation provides only short-term strength. You can't expect to completely change behaviors you've maintained for 20 years with an extrinsic motivator alone. Think about it, the number one extrinsic motivation for losing weight is to feel and look better, yet this motivator is very broad and weak. Sure, it might help you get to the gym for a few weeks, but it will only get you so far. A more specific and powerful motivator will give you a more long-lasting fuel source. 5/3/2021 The Ingredients of Staying Motivated https://ezinearticles.com/?The-Ingredients-of-Staying-Motivated&id=7108260 2/2 Intrinsic Motivation Defined: Motivation that comes from an internal desire/passion. Enjoying the actual activity and staying focused in the moment. Intrinsic motivation allows you to experience enjoyment of partaking in the daily activities that lead towards your goal. Extrinsic motivation can keep you going for the short term, (The ideal to feel and look good), but along the journey towards your goal, you might find that the activities your engaged in become enjoyable.

For example, I went from being a novice, inexperienced fitness athlete to a knowledgeable expert on how to move the body and stay in shape. It actually became a passion of mine and I now have intrinsic motivation to exercise every day. Through consistent practice of behavior change, one can develop an intrinsic motivation for the activity that was once difficult. Intrinsic motivation comes from consistent and focused action on a specific activity. I wasn't born being passionate about exercise; however, after nearly 20 years of consistent physical activity, I have developed a passion for it. Through consistency, education, and persistence, one can develop an intrinsic motivation for something that was once challenging. An intrinsic desire, to engage in an activity, creates very intense emotions that give purpose and meaning. If you're lucky enough to have a hobby, career, or interest that engages you to such a level where time ceases exist and you experience a state of flow, then you've uncovered a key ingredient to a fulfilling and long-lasting life. A truly intrinsic motivation will provide any amount of fuel to break through any unwanted barriers to change. Motivational Resources Periodic infusions of motivation from a seminar, class, webinar, audio CD, book, friend, or team are essential on the path towards behavior change and goal attainment. In fact, they are critical. It's been said that motivation lasts around 3 months; however, I believe that even more consistent injections of motivation can lead to increased focus and consistent action towards your goals. A regular injection of motivation from an external source gives you energy, focus, determination and ultimately the belief that you can and will achieve your goals.

The increased motivation from listening to a CD, reading a book, attending a class or seminar will give you much needed fuel along your journey. They should be regarded as an essential tool for keeping you on target towards your goals. 1 st Steps So, if you're like most people who know they are destined for greater success, yet quit before attaining the ultimate goal, then do something different next time. Clearly identify a specific extrinsic motivation, seek deep for your intrinsic desire, and engage with frequent motivation resources to keep you focused and motivated. You'll be amazed at the improvement in energy and hope you'll receive. References: Petri, H. (1995). Motivation: Theory, Research, and application. Wadsworth Pub Co; 4th edition. (Brooks/Cole).
